1.      Montag wasn’t sure whether Beatty or the woman was right. At first he believed that books were things that were to be burned. However, soon after he tries to find out more about books. He was curious when the woman died for the books, and he starts reading books. I believe that books are the most logical resources we can look into. It gives information and teaches us everything we need to know. Through books many famous people could improve the world. Books give us knowledge therefore; it is needed throughout our life.

2.      I chose Montag as my example. Montag’s external conflict was when Beatty and Faber both trying to convince him that book is wrong and right. Beatty tells him that books are meaningless also it discourage people and bring them unhappiness. But, Faber tells him that book is important. It shouldn’t be burned and other people should find out more about books. The Internal Conflict was when Montag gets confused and curious at why some people would die for books. After seeing the woman burn to death with books, he tries to figure out what books are. He starts stealing some books and tries to figure out what books are and how it changes people.

3.      I chose Montag for my character and I chose the song Lose yourself by Eminem: “You own it, you better never let it go you only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow this opportunity comes once in a lifetime yo.” This part kind of applies to this part of the song, when he entered the firemen house he had a chance to spy on the firemen with the shell on his ear that Faber used to hear the firemen talking. This was a good chance and he didn’t do a good job which let Beatty to suspect him for reading a book. If he did well he won’t have be caught. He gets one shot, one opportunity to spy on the firemen but he didn’t succeed and ends up getting caught.

4.      I would save a world history text book. It is not my favorite book; however, I will save it because history book contains many important facts. Without this book people won’t know how things were started and how their ancestors lived. They won’t even know how things were invented. History book contains the beginning of the human nature and I think this will help the people to know more about themselves too. This would also give them an idea of how things should be done in order for them to live a better life.

Contact Lenses and Glasses

Glasses were invented long before contact lenses were made. Contact lenses and glasses both improve the vision of the people with bad eyesight.  Contact lens is similar to glasses; in fact, it is an upgraded form, which can be comfortably worn and still attain the same effect of improving ones’ vision.

Several similarities can be found between these two objects. They equally aid the vision of a person’s eyesight, and they both require cleaning and cautious handling. They are always taken out before the users goes to sleep, and both of them are not worn permanently but temporarily. A person with bad eyesight must wear glasses or contact lenses to have better vision. Glasses and contact lenses will both help the users to have better eyesight when they are worn. They are both essential for the users, without glasses or contact lenses people would not have clear vision; for example, one will have trouble reading a book or watching television. When the lenses of a pair of glasses are dirty, due to splashes of water or rain, they need to be cleaned or the glasses will be blurry and the vision won’t be clean. Just like glasses, contact lenses need to be cleaned when they are removed from the users’ eyes. Cleaning the contact lenses is essential, because if the users do not clean it and wear it on the next day, the dirt and germs might get into their eyes and cause infection or damage in their eyes. Moreover, glasses are taken off before sleep; this is to prevent the glasses from bending or breaking while sleeping, just like glasses are taken out before sleeps contact lenses are taken out too. This is because contact lenses block oxygen, which is needed for the corneas of the users’ eyes; if oxygen is blocked for a long time, such as during sleeps, it can potentially damage the users’ eyes.

However, there are many differences between glasses and contact lenses too. Unlike glasses, contact lenses are worn by placing it on the cornea, a small part of the eye that covers the iris and pupil. By placing the contact lenses on the users’ eyes, they would not feel the uncomfortable weight on their faces and ears to hold their glasses. Also, contact lenses have a better side vision. Since there is a distance between the eyes and the lens of the glasses, the users can only see the front view, and their side view would be unclear.

In many ways contact lenses are better than glasses; it is much more comfortable to wear, since the users do not have to worry about breaking or damaging their glasses while playing sports or accidents. Wearing glasses will give a weight to the users’ face and ears, and if they sweat their glasses will constantly fall down from their face, but wearing contact lenses will solve this problems. Furthermore, the space between the users’ eyes and the lenses of the glass won’t give the users good side vision, plus distances between the eyes and the glasses can cause distortion to the users’ vision. However, contact lenses will allow the users to have a good side vision, and have a proper vision unlike glasses. Although contact lenses are better in a lot of ways, they also have negative effects to the ones who use it. Wearing contact lenses can cause eyes to be dried up due to lack of oxygen in the eyes, and some of the users’ eyes will feel irritation and itchiness. Furthermore, while inserting contact lenses the users might touch their eyes with their fingers, and this can led bacteria to enter their eyes, causing infections. Also if a person needs to wear contact lenses for a long time, he or she would rather wear a pair of glasses. Glasses can last few years and can be repaired; however, contact lenses must be bought once a year to be replenished and once they are torn or damaged, they can’t be repaired, but only replaced.

In many ways, glasses and contact lenses are similar, and they have the same effect. They both are essential for people with bad eyesight and aids in the people’s vision. Even though they share some similarities, they still have a lot of differences. Some might find glasses more comfortable, but others might prefer glasses. Both of them have their own unique benefits and drawbacks.

Character Analysis

The Last Sin Eater

In the book “The Last Sin Eater,” there are various kinds of characters; one of them is Cadi Forbes who is the main character in this book. Cadi is a little ten years old girl. She is a dynamic character who slowly changes when she meets characters such as the sin eater and the man who she believed was sent by God.  Despite of her young age, she goes through much difficulties and fearsome challenges. She pushes herself to overcome these difficulties because she wants to be absolved from her sins by finding the sin eater. When she finally finds out that sin eater cannot take away her sins, she gives up all her hope, but soon finds out that only God could cleanse her sins and guide her.

Cadi is a determined character who would risk anything to do what she has to in order to rid her sins. Her mind is always full of curiosity; for example, when her grandmother died, nobody dared to look at the sin eater; however, only she was curious and willing to look at the sin eater. Furthermore, she is willing to find out everything she can, in order to get what she needs. For example, she went to the dead mountains to find the sin eater, a fearful man who frightened everyone in the village. Cadi, with her great bravery, was even willing to go to the dead mountain where no one lived by herself, just to meet the sin eater.  Also, when the Kai’s family told everyone to stay away from the man of the God, only Cadi dared to disobey the Kais and talk to him. Even though the Brogan Kai, the father of Fagan came and warned her by slapping and choking her, she still insists to meet the man of the God.

Cadi is honest, but in some consequences she lies, because she needed to keep people from finding out what she planned to do. Mostly she didn’t lie, and if she has to keep people from finding out, she would rather stay quiet and simply not reply. Cadi is very responsible too, she has many chores to do in her house; in fact, she does most of the housework, such as dish washing and gardening. Moreover, she would always finish her chores before leaving the house. Next, she would always come back in time before the sun falls and gets dark, unless something happened and she could not come back. Cadi changed gradually: at first she thought that the death of her sister was all of her fault. She started finding the sin eater, so she could ask him to cleanse her sins; however, when the sin eater could not, she was depressed and gave up all her hope. But, later she meets the man of the God and started changing. She had hopes and believed that God loved her, guided her through her path, and cleansed her sins. She wanted to forget and wash her sins, because she wanted her mother to love her once again, and did not want to feel guilty about what had happened to her sister.

Overall, Cadi plays a big role in “the last sin eater”. When everyone opposed the man of the God by trying to chase him out of the village, Cadi accepted it wholeheartedly. Cadi was an ethical character, and she was trying to the right thing for herself and for the others; however, people thought that she was doing the wrong things and brought harm to them. Still, throughout the story, Cadi fights back and does not let people from stopping her. She continues and does what she intends to do, even though she would eventually face many difficulties. She does not let those difficulties stop her from what she was reaching for. At last she finds comfort and believes that God can help her throughout her life.

Patience

My Dad and I ate our dinner in a delicious Korean restaurant. After we had finished eating we walked out of the restaurant and quickly headed down to the parking lot to head home. As soon as we got on the car and got out of the parking lot rain was pouring down viciously, and sadly we had to go through an everlasting traffic that never seemed to move.

When we were in the middle of the traffic my dad and I waited patiently; however, the cars barely moved and were at a near standstill in the traffic jam. Shortly we grew weary of waiting, and there was nothing else we could do to get out of the traffic, but wait tolerantly. Despite of the heavy traffic we were surprised that that almost none of the car honked or yelled at each other for driving slowly or unmannerly. Additionally, the drivers mostly conceded other drivers to cut in front of them. My dad and I thought that drives in Malaysia had good manners; however, this slowed the cars and led to heavier traffic jam. We were getting frustrated as we saw more cars cutting in front of us which slowed down other cars behind.

A couple of minutes later, the traffic became smoother; but the traffic light still stood firm stopping speedy cars that tried to get out of the traffic. My patience was at its limit, and I was already fed up with the traffic and hoped to go back home quickly. My dad was frustrated too, and he drove hastily without patience. As he accelerated, suddenly a big Toyota truck stopped right in front of us.  Surprised at an instant stop we yelled for our lives, and my dad immediately stepped on his break peddle. However, it was too slippery for our car to come to a stop because of the rain. As a result, we crashed the car in front, I slowly opened my eyes and looked around to check if everything was okay, and thankfully my dad was alive. I was thankful that we didn’t have a head on collision which would have killed us or gave us serious injuries. My dad was alright; he looked at me worrying and asked me if I was all right. I told him that I was fine, and then we got off the car to check what reason was behind the accident.

When we got off the car, we saw several people out off their cars too. We found out that we were not the only one who had an accident; the accident involved around eight individual cars and multiple collisions. Some people were bleeding, and some of the cars were crushed, but no one seemed to have serious injuries. The people approached and started asking us if we were all right, we told them we were fine. My Dad and I was surprised that no one was quarreling or fighting over who started this accident. Although my dad and I were angry we couldn’t do anything because no one was complaining about the accident, instead everyone waited patiently for the police to arrive.

Once again, my dad and I were getting annoyed because the police didn’t come after we waited for an hour. After waiting for another tiresome thirty minutes, the lazy and irresponsible police finally arrived. However, the policemen came and did their job slowly and poorly, plus they couldn’t even speak English, and we didn’t understand the Malaysian language they were speaking to us. Having no idea about what they were talking about; we were once again fed up and tired of waiting.

Although we made a grimace and showed the policemen our disgusted and frustrated face, they didn’t do anything but smiled back. This made us even angrier because we felt that they were sneering and humiliating us. However, at last my dad and I finally learned that our anger or impatience won’t change anything; it won’t speed up their process and investigation of the accident. Therefore, we adopted their idea and tried to do things slower and calmly. When we had erased our mind of rushing we felt comfortable and peaceful.

From this accident my dad and I learned that not every country has the same custom as Korea; therefore, we should adopt and follow their customs. We learned to grow patience and stay calm on things that we had to face. After we learned our lesson in the accident, we were able to solve problems easily when we faced them again in Malaysia.

Wealth Vs Values

Does money change people’s traditional values? Many people believe that they can maintain their traditional values. However, studies show that as people grew wealthier, their values, beliefs, and life style changed. Nevertheless, the people don’t realize that they are changing. There are two reasons why people can’t maintain their values. First, as people gain wealth they starts sinning and taking evil path. This is because people want to try out new things that they couldn’t do because they lacked financially. Second, as people grow wealthier and try out things that they couldn’t, they will not be thankful for what they have, and they will never be satisfied. As they try out more of wrong things, they will view things right even though they aren’t.

People will sin and fall into evil path that will change their values, as they have more money they will try out new things that the riches do. In the first place, when the people were poor they wouldn’t know or understand why rich people use money so carelessly and waste on something worthless. For example in Good Earth the rich family wasted money on buying jewelries for concubines, smoking opium, and gambling tons of money. Of equal importance, the poor people have not tried all these things and they consider these wrong. But, without trying them they won’t know how these things can give them pleasure and addiction. Therefore, when the people are poor they have less opportunity to fall into evil path.  Oppositely, rich people can try these things and will easily fall into temptations and the evil path.

Secondly, as the poor become rich they won’t be thankful for what they have and seek for even better life. The problem with this is they will be no limit to seeking for better things; therefore, people will spend their money more and more to obtain everything they can, like opium and concubines. In support of this statement, people values changes as they get richer. Before they were wealthy they saw these things morally wrong; however, when they got richer they saw these things differently because they tried it and like it. Therefore, they change their view of wrong things. Consequently, they will change their thoughts of wrong things and think that it is right, although they are actually doing what they previously thought was wrong. Also they will believe that what they are doing is not wrong because every other wealthy people are doing it.

Now that we have examined that money changes people’s values, try to maintain the values even though your life has become better. There is a verse in Bible saying that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is easier for a rich man to enter the heaven. This verse means that it is very hard for rich men not to fall into temptations and evil paths. Therefore, even though we are rich we shouldn’t change our attitudes and values. Take another step, to keep money from changing your values, even though you try things that are pleasant and good, remember what is wrong is wrong and what is right is right. Does money change people’s traditional values? Yes, money can change people’s values; however, if people work hard to stop and resist themselves from falling into temptations and evil path, they can maintain their values.

Response to Literature

Response to the Lord of the Flies

In many literatures, authors write about conflicts that are faced between various characters in a certain situation. These conflicts, characters, and situations sometimes can represent the people and the period of time they are living in. In the literature called Lord of the Flies, characters are presented to symbolize different aspects of various people and the period of a certain time. In Lord of the Flies, the author wrote about four main characters that symbolizes the people in a certain period of a time. The four main characters are Jack, Piggy, Ralph, and Simon.

Jack was an energetic and selfish boy who led the choir strictly. At first he wasn’t that cruel and brutal, rather he insists on helping Ralph, and he was more cooperative; however, after hunting and killing pigs as well as  without the guidance of adults, he started changing brutally and savagely. Soon, he started disobeying the rules that Ralph had set up. In a little while he tries to become the leader, as a result, with his hunting boys he separate from Ralph and the rest of the group. He made his own group and ordered the boys; his boys killed piggy and Jack ordered his boys to kill Ralph for going against him. He was ruling like a dictator, these symbolize the dictator’s longing for power and his uncontrollable cruelness and brutality.

Piggy, a fat boy with asthma who can’t see properly with his glasses shows, how physically weak he is; but mentally strong and smart. He is calm, smart, and is able to think of the situations logically. Even though the boys insulted and teased him, he didn’t let his emotions and actions take over him, instead he kept quiet. When Jack separated from Ralph and when everyone followed Jack, Piggy still stayed with Ralph, for he knew that Ralph was right and Jack was wrong. He wanted to persuade the boys to come back to Ralph and work together to be rescued and go back home. Piggy represents and symbolizes the people like democrats, who try to fix things and ideas that are morally wrong.

Ralph was the first boy who became the leader among the boys, in my opinion he was the best leader. He sets rules like democratic government, for example, he gave freedom of speech and whoever had the conch could speak freely and share their thoughts. But, later Jack disobeyed his rules and broke apart from the group; he also took some of the boys he hunted with and formed his own group. However, Ralph tried to reunite the group to help one another and work together to be rescued. Ralph represents the opposite force of a dictator, who tries to change the people ideas about absolutism. He acted like a leader of a democratic government, who sought revolution and fought against the dictator.

Simon is a quiet and mysterious boy who wandered around alone in the jungle; he thought about things deeply and kept things to himself. He and other boys discover the dead pilot in the jungle, all the boys except Simon thought that the pilot’s corpse was the beast. However, Simon knew that the beast is not real and knew that it was just the boys’ fear that made them think that it was a beast. When the boys were all scared of the imaginary beast, only Simon was not scared of it.  Later he tries to explain that the beast was not real, but he is killed by the hunting boys who mistook him as the beast. He represents a Christ like figure who can see and distinguish right and wrong, but is ignored by the people and die out.

These four characters in the book

each presented and symbolized certain people in a period of time. This author used these four characters to show how each character struggled in a certain situation and how they tried to overcome and solve the conflicts. The situation is equivalent to a certain period of time people are living in, and these conflicts they faced is also equivalent to the conflicts the people are facing right now or have faced before.
